Caryatids Accent Table

Three cabriole legs, dressed with caryatid mounts and ending in sabots, carry the Theodore Alexander Caryatids Accent Table and its brass bound shaped circular top. A morado veneered frieze runs below the top, enclosed by foliate ormolu mounts, and a shaped undertier links the legs close to the floor. It is a small piece that behaves like a jewel.

Design & Craftsmanship

Khaya and oak solids are veneered in okoume and morado, then finished in Ramsey Mahogany, with brass used for the binding around the top and for every applied mount. The ormolu work is what dates the design: foliate castings frame the frieze while the figures at the knees repeat around all three supports. The Theodore Alexander Caryatids Accent Table comes from Theodore Alexander's Althorp Living History collection, and other pieces in that collection can be ordered to sit with it. At 29 inches high and roughly 18 inches across, it reads well beside a wing chair in a Coral Gables library, at the end of a sofa in Pinecrest, or as a small lamp table in a Miami entry where a full console would block the walk through.
