Grandmaster Game Table

The Theodore Alexander Grandmaster Game Table is built for long evenings of chess and backgammon. Its circular moulded edge holds a parquetry top of mahogany, acacia and oak, and the centre is reversible: a leather playing surface on one face, a chess inlay on the other. Set into the same top is an inlaid backgammon board well, and the whole piece rises on an octagonal flared column above a quatrefoil underscrolled base. A wooden chess set and backgammon counters come with it.

Design & Craftsmanship

Grandmaster is a Marst Hill piece, made from khaya wood with acacia, khaya, walnut and sycamore veneers, so the pattern work relies on the natural contrast between species rather than on stain alone. Three finish materials are listed for it: Marst Hill 2016 (VCF1205.1C2EB.MAO), Marst Jeu (VCF1317.1B2AA) and Dark Marst Hill (VCF132.19.1C2E). Clearance under the apron is 26.5 inches, so most occasional or dining chairs pull straight up to it.
