The India Silk Bedside Nightstand

Scaled for the bedside, the Theodore Alexander The India Silk Bedside Nightstand is a bombé chest with three shaped serpentine drawers, cast brass drop handles and a rectangular moulded-edge top. The original is a George III bedside chest of about 1770, made in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, and it is reproduced here for the Althorp Living History collection. This is a nightstand for someone who wants real presence beside the bed rather than a slim, lightweight table.

Design & Craftsmanship

The case is khaya wood with okoume veneer in the Ramsey Mahogany finish (VCF133), with Swirl Brown (LCF005) and gold tooling (LT02) adding the decorative surface. A brushing slide pulls out below the top for extra bedside space, and the three graduated serpentine drawers below it are applied with finely cast brass escutcheons and drop handles. A plinth base with ogee bracket feet finishes the piece, and an anti-tip kit is provided. At 28 inches wide and 30 inches tall it holds its own beside a taller bed.
