The India Silk King Bed

The Theodore Alexander The India Silk King Bed is a carved mahogany four poster bed with flame veneers and parcel gilt detail, reproduced from a George III original of about 1760 that stands in the India Silk Room at Althorp. The arched headboard carries a carved cornice, the posts are acanthus-carved baluster and cluster columns, and each is topped with a spiral-carved pine cone finial. It suits a grand primary bedroom in a house with the ceiling height to carry a headboard of more than 97 inches.

Design & Craftsmanship

Theodore Alexander builds the bed in khaya wood with okoume and khaya veneers. The main finish is Ramsey Mahogany without distressing (VCF342), and the parcel gilt highlights are done in Italian gold rub through over a Ramsey Mahogany base (PCF006F), a technique that gives the gilding an aged look. The posts are removable, which makes delivery into an upstairs bedroom or through a condo elevator simpler. The bed takes a US King mattress of 76" x 80", accepts most adjustable mattress frames, and an 8" box spring is recommended.
