The India Silk Serpentine Chest

The Theodore Alexander The India Silk Serpentine Chest is a large bombé chest of drawers in mahogany with flame veneers, reproduced for the Althorp Living History collection. Four shaped serpentine drawers graduate in depth beneath a rectangular moulded-edge top, and the whole case swells outward in the classic bombé silhouette. It suits a collector's primary bedroom or a formal dressing room where a single case piece has to carry the room.

Design & Craftsmanship

Khaya wood with khaya and okoume veneers carries the Ramsey Mahogany finish (VCF133), paired with Swirl Brown (LCF005) and blind and gold tooling (LT04) for the decorative surface detail. Just under the top sits a brushing slide, a pull-out surface that originally served for brushing clothes and today makes a handy spot for a tray or a jewelry box. Each drawer is applied with finely cast brass escutcheons and drop handles, and the case rests on a plinth base with ogee bracket feet. An anti-tip kit is provided.
